Spartans celebrated a single man’s last night of freedom with a raucous party. Although, somewhat disappointingly, they watered down the wine to avoid a wedding day hangover.
Bachelorette parties were not customary until the 1960’s. Before that, all women had were bridal showers, which were considered the female equivalent of bachelor parties. (Because receiving an engraved photo frame is somehow the same as partying all night in a hotel room.)
Through the years, bachelor parties have changed and most men opt to skip the old school stripper party and spend a fun filled day/weekend with their buddies! A popular choice today is a jack and Jill (co-ed bachelor/bachelorette) party.
