How to Make Yellow Bridesmaid Dresses Work

Yellow isn’t the first color that comes to mind when one thinks of a universally flattering hue. It’s not a terribly common color in a majority of closets, and anyone with even a hint of color-phobia probably puts it fairly low on the “I’ve got to try that” list.

But yellow gets an unfairly bad rap. Available in everything from a very pale, buttery springtime shade to something super bold and adventurously primary, according to fashion experts, there is a yellow out there for every one.

Yes, it is possible to find yellow bridesmaid dresses that work!

Season

Pale yellow is perfect for a spring palette, and pairs well with other pastels and light grey. Primary and sunflower yellow with bright aqua, turquoise or fuchsia are great for a beach-going summer wedding while amber or mustard tones work great in fall. Winter might seem like the toughest fit, but yellow-gold sequins, like twinkling stars in a dark winter sky, are on-trend and dazzling in holiday and glamorous winter designs.

Yellow works in fall palettes too. Incorporate it throughout your wedding décor in linens, centerpieces, bouquets and in your wedding party attire. If you like the mix-and-matched bridesmaid look a lot, dress each of your attendants in a different fall foliage shade like burgundy, gold, hunter green, and a flattering shade of red-orange.

Location & Theme

Imagine a garden wedding and a bridal party in sunny yellow dresses (and handsome men in dark suits with perfectly-matched yellow ties) lined up against natural flowers and shrubbery in full bloom – the vision is breathtaking. Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2017 is greenery, which the company describes as “yellow green”. A palette of yellow and shades of green is an excellent interpretation of one of this year’s hottest trending themes, “Back to Nature”.

Plan a swoon-worthy Southern-style wedding with groomsmen in seersucker suits and bridesmaids in butter yellow tea length dresses. A serve-yourself lemonade stand and tall cocktail tables in alternating crisp white and yellow linens would make the perfect pre-ceremony reception area.

Draw your inspiration from nature – the shining peel of lemons, cheeriness of gerbera daisies and spring tulips, or the pink-yellow of a beachside sunset. Paired with navy blue, yellow is nautical, with pale pink it is soft and feminine, and with pewter and rust it’s quite rustic. Who says there isn’t a yellow palette for everyone?

Separates

Another secret of the fashion elite is to incorporate any color you want into your wardrobe, just pair it with a neutral or something you know looks great with your complexion and keep the more flamboyant color away from your face. The 2017 two-piece trend is the perfect opportunity to make this work. Put a floor-length or fun tea-length tulle yellow skirt together with a white, black, or even a blush blouse for a great spring or summer bridesmaid ensemble.

The Compromise

If you’re infatuated with the color, but just can’t make completely yellow bridesmaid dresses in any available shade work, choose another color from your palette for your dresses and go to town with the yellow accents. Jewelry, bouquets, pashminas, shoes – there is a way to incorporate you favorite color into any outfit, so be creative!

There are so many ways to make yellow work for your attendants – if it makes your heart happy, don’t shy away from it. Simply adjust your approach until you find the perfect way to incorporate it into your wedding day style!
