Mixing ties with shirts sounds pretty easy, but when dressing with fashion in mind you might have to think twice about which tie should go with which shirt. Trends noted in recent years indicate a preference for mix and match, and in this case your ability to mix plaids and stripes could make the difference between looking ‘ok’ and making a fashionable statement. What you will discover is that textures create a new perspective on fashion. Matching up ties and shirts is not rocket science and you have probably been doing it well for years; however, it does not hurt to know how to match plaid shirts with pattern shirts for a dapper look.

Let your shirt guide you

As long as you are not color blind, you should be able to match up your shirts with similar colored ties. It does become somewhat a challenge to match pattern ties with plaid shirts. In this case, let the prominent color determine the tie you choose. For instance, if you opt for a dark brown shirt, you should settle for a tie that is a little bit subtle. The aim is not to lose your tie against the color of your shirt, but to complement your shirt using the tie. What this means is that if you choose a dark colored plaid shirt pair it with a similar colored pattern tie in a lighter shade.

Go for graduate checkered ties for a quirky, preppy look

Pairing a checkered tie with a checked shirt requires some skill, or at least a keen eye. The main reason why you would pair checked ties and shirts would be to pull off a quirky, preppy look. In this case, the rule of thumb is that your shirt should essentially have smaller checked prints and the checked prints on your tie should be a little bit larger. Don’t forget that it is always about matching up colors when it comes to ties and shirts; your tie and shirt should complement each other color-wise. Another aspect to remember is to choose trousers in line with the overall color scheme that you are working with.

Vary your Weights in Between Patterns

Try and avoid choosing shirts and ties in similar patterns, to avoid creating a confused look. Go for a visually clean and fresh look. If you settle for a shirt with thin, white stripes pair it with a tie that has large blue stripes. This combination will not only give your outfit a subdued look, but it will also boost the prominence of your tie and breaking off the monotony of a solid colored shirt.

Mix up your patterns

On the flip side if you are a little bit adventurous, try mixing up patterns. This is essentially the right choice if you are aiming for a quirky look. The main thing to remember is that you should maintain small patterns for the shirt and larger one for the tie or vice versa. This might be the only instance that you don’t need to worry too much about matching up colors, as long as you go for shirt is neutral colors such as black, white or gray. This also makes it easy for those who are color blind to pull off the perfect look as well.
