Top five tips for a stress-free wedding

Over the years I've been to a lot of weddings. Some have been incredibly luxurious while others have been simple yet elegant. I have watched brides as they enjoy themselves or as they push themselves towards nervous breakdown. What I have learned from watching the ones who enjoy themselves the most is that there are a couple of easy things that you can do to help have a stress-free wedding day.

1. Be yourself

Whatever you have seen other people do, whether they be celebrities are just friends, is not necessarily what you should do. The most beautiful weddings that I've seen were ones where the bride and groom were truly expressive of themselves and the life they were creating together. It will also altogether much more naturally it comes from your heart rather than trying to the imitation of someone else's. From handmade invitations, designed just for you, to the choice of food and music don't be anything but yourself.

2. Give yourself time

I have seen brides push themselves to near nervous breakdowns in order to keep to exact schedules. Remember, the wedding cannot happen without you. And while you don't want to keep people waiting for hours, if you need five more minutes to finish your makeup or go to the bathroom or anything else, take it. It is far better to shift schedule slightly bent to drive yourself insane.

3. Get a wedding planner

Now if you are having a wedding in your backyard with only four guests, this might not apply to you. However, if you are planning a large wedding you will need help. Before you begin planning you would be surprised at how much there is to coordinate, but after you begin planning you quickly realize what an enormous undertaking this can be. A planner, whether a professional or simply a friend, can go a long way to reducing your stress levels as you approach your wedding day. They can provide expert guidance from invitations to final exit. If you start your wedding day stress free there is a much greater chance that you will end it stress-free as well.

4. Be comfortable

Unless you are accustomed to walking around in 18th century costume, there's a very high chance that what you wear on your wedding day will be less comfortable than what you would wear to stay home and watch TV when it's raining. However, making whatever adjustments you can to increase your physical comfort will more than pay off in peace of mind. Pack for yourself a pair of comfortable shoes, for example, in case you want to change them later in the evening… Better yet, of course, is to simply wear comfortable shoes to begin with, but sometimes that just doesn't happen, so it's better to be prepared!

Think about this as you are choosing your wedding dress and having altered. There's nothing wrong with having your wedding dress help to push your body into a shape you find more pleasing, however, remember that the man you are marrying loves you, not your silhouette. If you can't breathe or raise your hands the chances that you will enjoy yourself are greatly diminished. You will look best when you feel best; a happy bride is a radiant bride - no matter what her body type.

5. Live in the moment

Whatever stresses you have in your "real life," set them aside, if only for this evening. Thinking about them during your wedding won't make them go away. Let yourself be selfish and carefree, there will be plenty of time to involve yourself in the everyday worries of life after your wedding is over.
