In our coveted industry it is easy for unscrupulous vendors to take advantage of unsuspecting clients. Before you know what happened, you have given your money to someone who no longer returns your calls. Sure, you can sue them but that can take years and you may or may not get your money back. Not to mention you are already out the money and your wedding is near. How do you know who to trust?

There are a few simple things you can do to make sure your vendor is one to trust. First…use your instincts. If a deal sounds too good to be true you are usually correct. A quality vendor in today’s market will have a phone number, address, web-site, and possibly a facebook page as well.  Their work should be on display for all to see. Stay clear of people on craigslist or any location where all you have is a number to call and nothing else.

I suggest you start asking around your community. Find out who you know that has used this person for the real scoop. Referrals from a vendor are great, but there is always a chance it is a friend of theirs. It is best to use a third party for your investigation. You can get good lists from planners, venues, friends, and facebook is even very helpful.

Once you have a solid few referrals, start calling them. A vendor should make you feel like their most important client and return calls and emails promptly. If a vendor does not return calls or emails from the start, that is a huge red flag and you should move on to the next one. Make sure you have a contract and everything promised is in writing. If a vendor says they cannot put something in writing, run! All quality vendors will make you feel special right away! Remember, this is your special day, your hard earned money, and we work for you.
