The work doesn’t stop once you and your new spouse have said your vows. There are still certain things you will want or even need to do after your wedding has come and gone.

The first thing you will want to make sure you do is to save the rest of your wedding cake. This is something that should be addressed as soon as the festivities have ended. Your catering staff should be tasked with boxing up the top tier of your cake and a family member or close friend should take it home for you.

Before the cake is boxed up the person tasked with this job will need to take any decorative items such as sugar based flowers off of the cake. It should be chilled before it is packed up otherwise the icing will smear all over the plastic it gets wrapped in. Multiple players of plastic wrap should be used rather than aluminum foil. If you wrap your leftover wedding cake in aluminum foil it will likely lead to freezer burn.  After the cake has been wrapped up it should be kept in an airtight bag and left in your freezer until you are ready to open it.

The second thing you will want to do is to make sure your bouquet is properly preserved. You have two choices for preserving it depending on whether you want to keep it in a picture frame or a shadow box. Keeping it in a picture frame involves taking a few of the flowers from your bouquet and flattening them. To keep your bouquet in its original form you will want to choose a shadow box. There are companies that you can mail your bouquet to and receive it in the box in a vacuum sealed glass container.

In addition to preserving your bouquet you will also want to preserve your wedding dress. After your wedding you should have it professionally dry cleaned and then find a preservationist. This is a task that ideally should be done within days of your wedding, even if you have to ask a friend or family member to do it for you. When you receive the dress back from the preservationist it will be in a box which should be kept away from direct sunlight, moisture and high or low temperatures.

Another important task to complete after you are married is sending out thank you notes. These notes should go out in a timely manner and the first notes should be sent to anyone that gave you a wedding gift within a week or two of your wedding day. Everyone else will expect their thank you note within about a month of the date you return home from your honeymoon or the date of your wedding day if you don’t go on a honeymoon.

Last, but certainly not least, you’ll need to change your name. For most brides, changing your name after your wedding is one of the most important tasks to complete, but there are exceptions. Some brides don’t change their name at all, and in that case you can skip this step. However, if you are like most women, changing your name is something that you’ve been looking forward to for quite some time.

Ensuring that these things are done after you are married will make it easier for you to relax and enjoy your new life.
