How to Have Open Communication with Your Spouse after the Wedding

Communication is the key for any good relationship, and now that you are married it is much more important. The problem is that some subjects are a little hard to bring up for a number of reasons. The following is a guide to help you stay as open as you can be with your spouse.

Avoid Mind-Reading

One thing some newlyweds tend to do is think for each other. Sure, it is quite romantic to think that you can figure out what your spouse may be thinking, but it actually might send you into a non-communicative hole. You do not want to start your wedding off this way, so make sure you speak and find out what you are thinking about to help make this a habit.

Establish a Sense of Freedom

Some subjects are a little embarrassing to bring up, especially if you have not established a sense of freedom between the two of you. You do this by making sure you talk about being able to talk without being judged. Make this a rule so that you can talk about anything like having erectile dysfunction, which is more common than you might imagine. If this is something you are struggling with, consider ed medication.

Active Listening Is Vital

A big part of communicating with your spouse is silence since you have to learn to listen to each other attentively. Face your spouse when speaking and imagine everything he or she is saying, which helps you stay attentive. Do not interrupt or offer solutions unless you are asked to provide input. Learning to be an active listener helps both people feel appreciated since you both end up validating each other’s thoughts.

Learn to Dive

Having a relationship with open communication takes practice. You might want to make it a habit to address embarrassing things from the get-go so that you two are comfortable talking about anything else afterwards. It is okay if you are better at this than your spouse or vice-versa; the point is to try. Do your best to bring up uncomfortable truths about yourself to try to create an open culture within your marriage.

These are just some of the steps you can take to try to make sure you two are truly talking to each other. It is important that you realize that you are going to be spending your lives together, so you might as well begin to share your thoughts even the ones you might have kept secret before you got married.
