Sunken Gardens - A Stunning Wedding Venue in St Petersburg, Florida

I'll be the first to admit, I am not the botanical garden type! I had been to Sunken Gardens in St Petersburg, Florida once or twice before, and my recollection is one of chasing my kids around and trying to stop them from wrecking the place, and glancing at some nice flowers with passing interest here and there.

But when my wife and I visited Sunken Gardens a couple of weeks ago from the perspective of wedding vendors & wedding photographers, I walked away thinking wow - what stunning wedding venue!

Sunken Gardens is a historic botanical garden located near downtown St Petersburg, Florida. The City of St Petersburg descrbes it as "a botanical paradise in the midst of a bustling city", and goes on to say that "As St. Petersburg's oldest living museum, this 100 year old garden is home to some of the oldest tropical plants in the region".

Sunken Gardens is managed by the City of St Petersburg under a public-private partership, and is a wedding planner's dream! They have three distinct outdoor venues for weddings or receptions, including The Wedding Lawn, "a tropical paradise surrounded by towering royal palms and flowering bougainvillea", The North Lawn, surrounded by shady oaks and beautiful flowering plants, which also includes a gorgeous wooden pergola for ceremonies, and The Oak Pavilion, a cobblestone deck area "shaded by a 200 year-old oak canopy".


Sunken Gardens also boasts a second story indoor "Garden Room" with a built-in dance floor, food preparation area, and dining area for indoor receptions. Many brides rent the entire garden and get the best of both worlds, with three disctinct experiences: An outdoor wedding ceremony on the North Lawn or Wedding Lawn, a cocktail hour in the Oak Pavilion, and an indoor reception in the Garden Room!

And the venue prices at Sunken Gardens are very reasonable - they allow "walk-in weddings" for just the price of admission (currently $8 per person) for parties of 15 or less, and rental of the Oak Pavilion starts at only $750. Click here for Sunken Gardens's comple wedding venue price list.

Sunken Gardens also provides prospective brides with an approved catering list. The only thing they don't provide is a wedding officiant and photographer!

Sunken Gardens is open to the public from 10:00am to 4:30pm Monday-Saturday, and 12:00pm to 4:30pm on Sunday (ticket sales close at 4:00pm). Wedding venue rentals run from 9:00am to 3:00pm or 5:00pm to midnight.
