Customer Referrals & Giving Incentives to Refer

Wondering if any one is using any kind of incentives to get customer referrals and does it work for your business?

Do you ask customer only for referrals?  Or do you also join partnerships with other vendors and get referrals this way as well?

Would be great to swap ideas.
