Amethyst is the February birthstone and it is also the accepted gem for the 4th, 6th and 17th wedding anniversaries. It is a member of the quartz family and gets its name from amethysts, the Greek word for sober. One of the largest cut amethysts in the world is 343 carats and is housed at the National History Museum in London.

Over the past few years, jewel tones in clothing, décor and jewelry have grown tremendously in popularity. Deep purple has been known as the new black in fashion which is doing great things for Amethyst, the deep purple stone!

George Press, an expert in designing fine jewelry pieces and the owner of George Press Fine Jewelry store in Livingston New Jersey, has been designing Amethyst in rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces for over 30 years. He feels Citrine, which is a warm lemon yellow stone compliments Amethyst very well. George said that he, “also pairs Black Diamonds with Amethyst due to the contrast it creates which makes the Amethyst stone appear richer.” Amethyst is best set in rose or yellow gold due the hue of the stone and is usually in an emerald or cushion cut to help create that deep purple color. George feels, “the Amethyst stone is perfect for creating statement pieces in rings and pendants, while adding just the right amount of color to bracelets and earring.”
