Business Owners Need Balance & More Time in the Day

Wedding Professionals:

June 28th marks my 3rd wedding anniversary.  I can't believe how the time is just flying by.  This date is a special reminder for me to pause and appreciate all of the important things in my life - especially my husband, Bill.  I can honestly say that Bill is my best friend and soul mate.  And without his support, I would not have been able to start and maintain BridalTweet.com for the last 2+ years.  For BridalTweet, Bill has been my sounding board, my editor-in-chief, my support system and my rock.  Bill, thank you!  In honor of my wedding anniversary, to the right are some old photos of the big day!  Images by Merri Cyr.

This date also helps me to reflect on my business and on my life.  I ask myself - am I working at a pace where I can still enjoy the things that matter most to me - my hobbies, family, friends, etc.?

No matter what pace you're working at, I'm sure that there is an opportunity for you to find more 'balance' in your life.  As small business owners, it's a great idea to pause every now and then because it is easy to get caught up in the busy day-to-day.  Doing so will help you to eliminate unnecessary or inefficient tasks - creating more energy for productive or profitable ones.  Most importantly, it will create more free time for you.   The key here is to hone in on the things that are driving the most results for you.

To achieve this, my advice is to create a worksheet with the following questions...

  • What are 1-2 personal goals that I want to achieve in the next six months?
    • What steps do I need to take to achieve these goals?
    • What activities do I need to eliminate in my life to help me achieve my goals?
  • What are 1-2 business goals that I want to achieve in the next six months?
    • What steps do I need to take to achieve these goals?
    • What activities do I need to eliminate in my life to help me achieve my goals?
  • Finally, what are the 1-2 accomplishments (personal or business) that I can be proud of in the last six months?

Ask yourself these questions and keep a journal of your answers.  Consider doing this exercise on a regular basis.  You may even consider buddy-ing up with a few other wedding professionals to make sure that you are staying on top of this.  Again, the goal for this exercise is to eliminate unnecessary tasks and create more energy for productive ones.  This is something that you'll have to constantly work at.  Not working at it could potentially jeopardize your business and your relationships.  Good luck!

I think this is a great reminder for us all. When working from home, it is always hard to separate work from personal. So that I reserve time for my family to do things together, I always keep Sundays as "no work day." Even if we do nothing more than stay home and watch movies, it is a day that we just spend with each other. This way, I still get to show them that they are important, even if work is normally all hustle and bustle.
