How To Construct The Perfect Wedding Speech

If you have been asked to give a speech at a wedding or rehearsal dinner, here are some things to think about.

Have a discussion with the bride and groom about what would be the appropriate length of the speech.

Construct the speech in advance. Write it on 5 index cards in the following categories:

1. Introduce yourself

2. Explain how you know the bride and groom

3. Thank the hosts of the party

4. Provide a memorable story

5. Wrap it up

Make your speech short and memorable. Do not bring up past events that are awkward or in questionable taste. Do not make your speech while drunk!

Note to wedding couple:  When your guests are toasting you, you do not drink. It’s a little like clapping for yourself.

Provide non-alcoholic options for your wedding guests who choose not to imbibe.
