I love the winter. My mother says that winter is the time of dead things. And I guess, in a way, she's right. But there is something about this dormant, somber season that speaks to me of possibilities. I can look at the trees and know that soon, they will be lively and green again, and the dogwoods will be sporting their lovely blooms, and the flowers will be opening to the sun. My mother prefers these times - when you can enjoy the colors and the birdsongs. I love spring, too, of course. But I like the winter best - because to me, the winter is the season of becoming. Of what could be. In the winter, all things are possible - hidden just beneath the surface of what looks like an impossibility

These photos were taken outside my home today. We live not to far from a river, which you can see snaking around through the trees. The snow has stopped falling, and the sky is beginning to clear...and I think I hear even more possibilities blowing in on the cold arm of the winter wind!

"In the cold heart of the darkest winter, there remains within me the spirit of an invincible summer..."
