I am way beyond excited to introduce my friend Dana of Bumble Bee Landing, who is one of my preferred vendors, to my blog readers! Dana is an up and coming florist serving the Boston area. When I first saw photos of her work on the blog of the gals at Pink Orchid Weddings, I was blown away by the professional quality and modern elegance of her work. Not only that, she's one of the sweetest people you could ever meet, you can tell immediately that she cares about you! Earlier this month, we collaborated on a bridal shoot to feature her work with help from my friend Carolina, who provided the makeup. Sarina, Brian, Elizabeth, and Sylvia (who traveled up from New Jersey!), thank you so much for being my willing models and for bearing with the weather! Boston had begun to get cold. In fact, our photoshoot got moved to Arnold Arboretum because it was raining and it was freezing cold, I had to work as fast as possible before everyone froze to death! Nevertheless, the flowers are absolutely beautiful, take a look, the work speaks for itself! Interview with Dana is below

1) What is your background? How did you decide to get into the floral business?
I am Asian - Vietnamese American :) I have always loved flowers, weddings, and romance! Therefore, it has just come naturally to me. As I recall, my childhood was surrounded with flowers as I watched my mother arrange flowers from our kitchen table and accompanied her as she worked on her flower garden. My mom loves red roses and sunflowers... I could recall that her sunflowers are as big or even bigger than a basketball. In short, thanks to my mom's love for flowers, I also inherited her genes.I have always known and wanted to get into the floral business one day, but didn't expect to pursue it at this time. I always thought that this is something I like to do when I retire someday. But then I thought it over... why wait? This is something I've always wanted to do, what's keeping me from pursuing this? So, my answer was, nothing! It doesn't hurt to try and if I fail, at least I know I tried! :)
2) How would you describe the style of the pieces you create?
I like to think it as a modern approach to classic beauty. Flowers are beautiful in nature! There is nothing you could do to change that nature but to be creative in the choices of colors and texture. As a creative florist,I see florals as an artist's palette for me to create, enhance, and manipulate every aspect available but keeping it true to its nature. In other words, I use colors, textures and manipulation to enhance the look of the flowers to achieve the desire look. As technical as it sounds, perhaps this is just a personal preference that I have when creating a floral arrangement or bouquet.
3) What are some important things in your life? [I'd LOVE if it you talked about is your cute family here!]
Of course my family is above all else :) I have 2 little boys. One is four years old and the other one is one year old. It's funny, I wanted a little girl so badly that I ended up with two boys! I was definitely banking on the second one to be a girl but out came Ryan. I love this little rascal! He is totally the opposite of me. He is outspoken and daring, more like his father. Alex, my first born, on the other hand... I think is more like me. A little more mellow and easygoing and I really think he inherited my love for flowers. Not only that, he loves to bake cupcakes and help me cook, even though it's selective. Alex should have been a girl!
4) What are some things you think brides should think about when looking into florists and planning their flowers?
I think brides should first think about... If they could have any flowers for their dream wedding, what would it be? Don't hesitate to tell florists what you love because, florists like myself are in the business of making your wedding dreams comes true. We see ourselves on your behalves as a second chance to do it all over. I'm a florist who has a passion to make you happy on your special day. It is a great pleasure of mine that i could be apart of that great dream.
- The first thing a florist would ask you is what flowers do you like? And what floral colors and color scheme that your wedding and wedding party would be?
- At least have all the answers to these questions before contacting a florist, this will help them greatly when considering the flowers and color choices for your wedding.
- Next would be BUDGET! Set a realistic budget! Flowers are expensive! Creating them takes time and planning. So be realistic on this. Have a budget and work with the florist on this. Many times a florist will be able to accommodate different floral selections for your needs... So, make sure you select a florist that you think will have your best interests at hand :)
5) What's your favorite thing about working on weddings?
Other then the floral selections, my favorite of all is the end results. There is nothing more gratifying than seeing a bride loving her wedding florals, that is my greatest pleasure! and I hope to achieve that every time :)
6) Anything else you'd like to say? [I can craft a question to this if you have an answer]
Congrats to those who are engaged and be sure to contact Bumble Bee Landing if you should have any floral needs :)
