As a child, I grew up attending the Catholic Church.  When I became an adult, I left the Catholic Church and started attending an Anglican Church in Edmonton.  It was there that I met my husband.  We were married in that church and all through 35 years of marriage, we have always been connected not only physically and emotionally but spiritually as well.  It is that spiritual and faith connection that we have that has brought us through good times and bad throughout our married life.

Whether you consider yourself religious or not, spiritual or not, when you are joined together in marriage, there is a spiritual transaction that happens.  Throughout all cultures and throughout all history, marriage has always symbolically represented two individual lives becoming one life together.  Does that mean that you give up your independent personality or spirit when you get married?  Of course not!  Having done many weddings over the years and spoken with many couples; they have all said the same thing.  Once we got married, our relationship changed.  It became deeper and the commitment to one another became stronger.  The connection becomes body to body, heart to heart and spirit to spirit.

There are three major life defining moments when God seems closer to us than ever.  When someone is born, when a couple get married and when someone dies.  It is in those moments that most folks want a divine blessing.  They want a blessing to cover their marriage; they want their newborn baby to grow up safe, protected and loved and they want comfort when a loved one dies.

It is important when you are planning to marry your partner that you talk about these things.  It is important that you are on the same page about what kind of spiritual life (if any) you are going to have in your marriage.  It is important that you connect spirit to spirit.
