Wow, what a year 2010 has been! Within the first few second of the year, I became engaged! As the clock struck Midnight to bring us in to the New Year, Deg was on his knee, asking me to soon be his wife. He posted on facebook "Asked Mel Diesel to marry me, she said yes of course. We're dancing the night away.I never new the meaning of that until now".
We danced to our wedding song ("Only You can Love Me This Way" Keith Urban) over and over again, then some of our other memorable moment songs- "Something Sexy about the Rain" Kenny Chesney, "Oklahoma Girl" Eli Young Band, "Man to Man" Gary Allen...All while laughing, crying, and chugging Asti straight out of the bottle. It was just him and I, and our dogs (which we did impromptu photo sessions with, which ended in them being terrified of us for hours). It was perfect though.
THEN, within days of our engagements, while I'm still on a wedding planning high, our bid was accepted on a house and we started the home buying whirl wind roller coaster.
So for the mean time,I have to put this wedding planning on hold. A not-so-screeching halt. After a few days of picking paints for bedrooms and bathrooms, I have gone back to spending all my free time online getting ideas, inspiration, for my big day. Here's what I have so far-
First Dance- Only You can Love Me this Way- Keith Urban
Father/Daughter Dance- I Loved Her First- Heartland
Mother/Son dance- he hasn't picked one, but I am suggesting Through the Years- Kenny Rogers or Simple Man- Lynard Skynard
Colors- Purple and Gun metal (or dark grey/charcoal, since Gun Metal is a hard color to find when planning a wedding)
Date- 8-6-11
Ceremony- His Grandma's church
Reception hall is up for debate still
DJ-Planning on asking my BFF's soon-to-be Husband
Food- Family cooking sides, having fish fry and hog roast

Nothing set on a cake yet, it's going to be hard for me to pick that out. Oh, here's a key part to the wedding planning, and something that will cause any, if not all, of the problems we'll have to battle- I'm planning our wedding in small Ohio...from Big City Texas! Our parents are playing a huge role in helping me get together ideas, his mom is even making me sample center pieces and decorations to choose from. But it's going to be hard to pick a photographer without meeting them and learning their personality, it's going to be next to impossible to pick a cake without taste testing! And flying back and forth to Ohio frequently to test people out, the meet, and choose....isn't going to be an option, not right now anyways.
I think I'm in over my head...But... Happy New Year!

Congratulations on your wedding. You're correct flying back and forth constantly would be more trouble then it's worth. What you want to do is arrange for at least one trip; but preferably two. Each trip is approximately 4 days and you spend those 4 days meeting with vendors, tasting cakes, etc. The second trip is closer to the wedding date after all the vendors have been chosen; to deal with any last minute details and see that all is running smoothly. If you can afford the expense it's always good to have a point of contact person in the city where the wedding will be held who knows the vendors and services offered there. I'm a destination wedding planner and these are the absolute basic steps that I go through when planning a wedding from a different country or city. I know it seems complicated when you're starting the process and have never planned a wedding from a different location; but it will be fine. You just need to be organized and make sure you arrange for all those vendor visits in one trip. It really is important to see the venue's and taste the food before you commit to them as the internet is not always an accurate representation. Since it sounds like he has family there it should make things a whole lot easier. Good luck and enjoy this time.
