Valentine’s Day has long been celebrated as a day to give gifts to your loved ones but we’ve often wondered about the history of this mysterious Saint!

A legend by the Catholic Church states that Valentine was a third century priest in Rome.  During this time, Emperor Claudius II concluded that single men were better soldiers than married men with wives and children. Marriages for young men were subsequently banned.

Valentine saw the injustice in this new law and secretly continued to perform marriages for young men.  When discovered, Claudius ordered that Valentine be put to death.

Today, Valentine’s Day is the second largest card giving holiday of the year and approximately one billion cards are sent each year!
