It has become customary for brides and grooms to present their guests with a small gift to take home as a memento of the occasion. Perhaps you’d like to give your guests a keepsake, but are concerned about sending them home with a knickknack that will just collect dust or get tossed out.

If so, consider this excerpt from The Green Bride Guide, by Kate L. Harrison.

Plant a Tree

For a green wedding, a tree is a wonderful favor. Trees clean the air of toxins, prevent soil erosion, and sequester carbon from the atmosphere. The Arbor Day Foundation allows you to find tree species appropriate for your area by zip code, and you can buy small evergreen saplings in favor-ready packages online from Tree Beginnings... Small trees can do double duty as decorations if you put them in beautiful pots. You can then use tags or stickers on the pots in lieu of place cards.

My husband and I gave out tree seedlings at our wedding in 1992, and watching some of those trees grow and thrive over the years has given us many pleasant memories, coupled with the satisfaction of knowing we have helped the environment. Wouldn’t you love to do the same?

If you have a picture of the tree as a sapling and again now, it would make a great guest post on the Green Bride Guide site! We would love to feature you. :)

That would be great!

If you click on the link to "our wedding" in the above post, you will find a picture of my aunt holding the seedling at my wedding, and another one of her tree taken fairly recently. Is that what you are looking for?
