Vintage Diamond Cuts and Shapes That Are Making a Comeback in Modern Rings

Today, choosing an engagement ring comes with many options when it comes to diamonds, and some of those options are vintage cuts, many of which are coming back into style. The difference between vintage diamond cuts and modern cuts is the size and number of facets or cuts. Modern diamond cuts feature many more machine-cut facets, which result in more sparkle. Vintage diamonds were hand-cut, though, which produced a softer, more organic glow which is very appealing. There are many different diamond cuts, but we'll review a few of the most popular.

Round Cut Diamond Engagement Rings

Round cut diamonds are very common, but when you’re talking about this cut, you need to know the difference between the modern round diamonds, also known as brilliant or round brilliant cut diamonds, and vintage round diamonds, also known as old European cut diamonds.

The difference between a modern round cut and a vintage round cut is the quality of sparkle. Modern round cut diamonds have a hard, splintered sparkle, while a vintage round cut has a more subdued brilliance. Many people prefer a vintage round cut diamond for its softer, more romantic glow.

Cushion Cut Diamond Engagement Rings

Cushion cut diamonds are square or rectangular with rounded edges. Vintage cushion cut diamonds are also called mine cut diamonds. Once again, modern cushion cut diamonds have many more facets, producing a hard, glittering brilliance. On the other hand, vintage cushion-cut diamonds have clarity that balances the shimmering facets. These diamonds were very popular in the Edwardian and Victorian eras.

Rose Cut Vintage Engagement Rings

You may not find a modern rose cut diamond, but dating back to the 16th century, the rose cut was very common. Unlike most modern diamonds, a vintage rose cut diamond has a flat back which makes a larger surface area. Thus, one carat rose cut diamonds appear larger than a one carat modern diamond. The top of the stone is cut into large, triangular facets, creating a domed top. Rose cut diamonds are known for their romantic glow.

Vintage Carré Cut Engagement Rings

A carré cut diamond is square, with faceted “steps” around the edges leading to a large top facet. This diamond also has a pointed, faceted back for added sparkle. If you love the Art Deco era, a carré cut diamond may be for you.

French Cut Engagement Rings

Like the rose cut, the French cut goes back hundreds of years, to the 15th century. This is a square, flat-backed diamond, cut with large, triangular facets topped with a large square. These beautiful diamonds were popular in both the 18th century and the Art Deco Era.

As they say, diamonds are forever. To add a feel of timelessness to your diamond ring, consider vintage and antique stones or cuts as an option for your engagement ring.
