Vintage is Back: Style and Make-Up Ideas for a Classy Bride

Vintage weddings are becoming popular choices for brides because they have such personality and class, allowing you to create one-of-a-kind style. But where do you start? Read on to learn how to achieve gorgeous vintage flair from your dress to your makeup and jewels.

Go Dress Shopping!

The most important way to achieve a vintage style is with your dress. When shopping for a vintage gown, bear the following tips in mind:

  • You can have a modern dress that is slightly vintage, such as with the use of lace and silk fabrics, instead of something handed down to you from your mother or grandmother. Although the latter is a beautiful sentiment, the dress itself might not always suit you. Remember that you can also give a modern dress the vintage treatment with accessories and jewelry.

  • Be careful when it comes to size. Vintage dresses will carry sizes from decades ago which might not fit you correctly, so take your time to find the right dress and bear in mind you might need to have it adjusted.

  • Choose the right decade. What decade or style feels most meaningful to you?  There’s the bias cut and silk of the 30s and fuller skirts of the 50s, for instance. Try on different styles to find the most flattering for your taste and body type.

  • Take a closer look. Because vintage dresses are much older, you need to study your dress closely before purchasing it to ensure it is in good condition. Check if there are any stains or moth damage. Try to see the dress in natural lighting, too.

Makeup Tips to be a Vintage Goddess

Your makeup should be glamorous as a vintage bride.

  • Be bold! A rich, red-toned lipstick (which happens to be a current beauty trend) and winged eyeliner create a sexy, dramatic effect. Remember to wear waterproof eyeliner as you don’t want the emotional speeches at your reception to ruin your makeup!

  • Keep your skin fresh. You want your skin to look gorgeous and healthy on your big day, so make sure you exfoliate to give you a glowing complexion. Intensify the radiance by applying your foundation with a sponge in a dabbing motion to keep it natural. Finish off with a highlighter product on your cheekbones and brow bone.

  • Create depth with eye shadow. Cover the whole eyelid with a pale, shimmery colour. Then draw a line of darker colour from the middle of the crease of your eyelid all the way down to the lash line. From this line towards the outer area of your eye, fill in the eye shadow, being sure to blend it in well so that the line disappears. Finish off by curling your lashes to give you a wide, bright eye, and applying two coats of mascara.

  • Sweep a rich blush in coral or soft pink across your cheeks and along your cheekbones to give you an attractive splash of invigorating colour and definition.

Shine Like a Diamond

Your bridal jewelry adds drama to your vintage look but make it match your dress and hairstyle. Short vintage necklaces are a great choice if you have a strapless and sleeveless gown because they bring attention to the neck area, while earrings are a good choice if your hair is in a vintage updo. When it comes to wedding rings, choose ones with vintage inspiration, such as art deco or milgrain bands. Gold rings are a great choice for recreating the class and sophistication of previous decades.

The great thing about vintage jewelry is that it sometimes breaks the mould, such as by allowing you to wear jewelry in different ways. You could wear a vintage brooch as a hair clip or, if you have a backless wedding gown, wear long, layered necklaces down your back.  Focus on making how you display jewelry as interesting as possible for maximum effect. Another idea is to make use of the stacking trend, but with pearl bracelets. You could even wind a long pearl necklace around your wrist for a chunky, interesting look.

It’s refreshing to do something different with your style on your wedding day, and choosing vintage fashion will make you feel like a glam goddess. From makeup and dresses to the perfect trinkets, it’s your time to shine.
