Weddings have many traditions. Whether its cakes, dress, or something old, borrowed, and blue, we always find our selves struggling to keep up with the new trends. Wedding videography is by no means something. People have been having their weddings video taped for many years. So what exactly is changing about it?

Wedding video used to consist (and in some cases still does) of maybe one or two cameras just recording the ceremony and slapping it together on a DVD and presenting it to the bride and groom. While all is good, where is the story? All you see there is just what happened. What you might want to see is your special day told in a unique and creative way. I have heard people say many times that photography would die out in weddings and it would all be video. Being a photographer my self, I am thankful that is not the case. So why does photography remain popular? Photographs not only capture still images of life, but the always consistently tell a story in a creative fashion. A good friend of mine and film maker, Justin Robinson, once told me that “the problem with wedding video is that there is no style, no creativity, no story telling.” He said that “if you are going to create wedding films, then do that. Make it a film.”

When I saw one of his wedding films for the first time, I understood what he meant. It was not just straight coverage of the ceremony. It was story that was told and executed by creatively, showing you the events of the day. Its not just they style of shooting, its the editing. It is how someone like Justin can bring it all together and make it magical. So what is a wedding film exactly? Great question! It is not your everday highlight reel. A great technique I have seen is starting off with a section of the ceremony (does not have to be the beginning) and pausing throughout with flashbacks of the bride getting ready or flash forwards to the reception. Its all brought together in a unique way. Most wedding films can average from 15 to even 20 minutes. They can include anything from interviews of the bride and groom to special messages from the wedding party. There also same day edits being done now. Where a team will edit the video throughout the day and it will be shown at the reception. Amazing right??

This new modern trend is growing fast. When someone asks me about covering the ceremony, I highly advise to go this route instead. I believe that you would be very thankful in the end. Here is an example of a teaser of a film by good friend Justin Robinson.
