Wedding Toastmaster - Who is he and what does he do?

A Professional International Toastmaster is not a well-known personality outside the UK but their duties are very important as they ensure a successful event whether it is a Wedding or a Corporate function.

Often referred to as the "Guardian of Etiquette" or "Master of Ceremonies", the Toastmaster’s role has evolved significantly over the years, and their skills are put to the most rigorous test at weddings. Professional Toastmasters will have trained and practised their skills under a recognised training programme, and although they maintain a tradition of formality, modern toastmasters adopt a more congenial tone and even a dash of light-heartedness to put the wedding party and guests at ease. They maintain a friendly and confident demeanour and will keep a calm, unflappable disposition even under stressful circumstances. Also it is their desire to ensure that the bridal couple and their families remain at ease and free of stress.

A toastmaster’s duties may include any, of all, of the following:

Meeting the couple beforehand to discover their expectations which is very important as it helps the Toastmaster to tailor his or her approach.
Making sure the day goes according to schedule
Greeting and welcoming guests as they arrive
Organising the Receiving Line
Escorting the newlyweds to the top table
Introducing the speakers and bringing forward the gifts to Bridegroom to present during his speech
Coordinating with the functions manager, photographer, videographer and DJ or band
Double-checking equipment (microphones) and facilities (fire exits)
Announcing the cutting of the wedding cake and the newlywed’s first dance
Arranging the ceremony of Throwing the Bride’s bouquet

Speeches

The Toastmaster is also responsible for directing the speakers and introducing them in the traditional order (the Father-of-the-Bride, the Bridegroom and then the Best Man). While they don’t normally have total control over the contents of the speech (which should have been prepared well in advance), they are happy to give advice on what should be included and also give the nervous speaker tips on how to relax. In some cases, they may be called upon to step in and do the honours in the event that someone is unable to deliver his speech. As official timekeeper, the Toastmaster will also make sure that speeches are delivered within a reasonable length of time.

Should you rely on venue’s staff or hire your own toastmaster?

Lots of venues offer wedding packages that include the services of a wedding coordinator or a member of staff who will undertake the role of MC. The decision to hire your own Professional Toastmaster or take the package depends largely on your budget and requirements although the fee for a Toastmaster is a negligible percentage of the overall amount spent of the day.

Bear in mind that the Toastmaster’s responsibility is to provide dedicated and undivided attention. This takes the pressure off the Bride and Bridegroom and their families, leaving everyone free to enjoy the day.

Choosing a Toastmaster

Recommendation from friends and family is a good start when looking for the right Toastmaster, but it's a good idea to have a few in mind. Many wedding magazines' websites will have a listing of recommended Toastmasters, with links to their websites plus you can Google the word "Professional Toastmaster". Also visit a few Toastmasters’ websites to obtain Toastmasters' details. Couples have to feel comfortable with their Toastmaster, so it’s worth while asking to see Testimonial letters before making a decision..
