Your Wedding Photography--It's All In the Details!!!

The saying goes, "It's all in the details."  This is particularly true when photographing weddings.  Details matter in photography in two respects.

  • It aids in the preparation of a shoot.  When I am preparing to photograph any wedding or portrait session, I try to compose a detailed list of the pictures and shots that I want to make sure I take.  I want to be properly prepared for any photography shoot and not just "wing it."  As they say in most any line of work, preparation is the key to success.   Yes, there is a creative force at work, on occasion, where instinct and spontaneity kicks in to inspire a great photograph.  You have to recognize when those opportunities arise and be ready to shoot those photographs.  If you see a shot that is appealing, composed beautifully, and right in front of you, you want to be able to capture the power of that vision.
  • Details in terms of photography shots, especially in terms of weddings, also aids in preserving the memories of things that either fade, are eaten or packed away.   Detail shots help you remember that most perfect shoe  that you finally tracked down for your wedding, the delicious and visually appealing food consumed, the beautiful cake, your bouquet, the champagne flutes, the color of the flowers on the aisle floor runner, the flower on your groom's lapel, and your gorgeous wedding dress that you said "yes" to.

Your photographer should know what pictures are envisioned to be taken and should be open to what you might have in mind as well.  For my weddings, when I consult with my bride and groom before their wedding, I make especially sure that I get a list from them of the pictures that they want to make sure are taken.  I do have a general idea that photographs of particular family members are important to take.  That list would in most cases include, moms, dads, grandparents, siblings.  Beyond that, I talk to my bride and groom about the pictures that are essential to have, for example, pictures of good friends, grouping of friends, family groupings, and family dynamics.

Your wedding photographer should feature photographs of your dress, your cake, glasses, table settings, and preserve in photographs any other thing you feel is special and significant in your wedding.  All of these things can be considered individual art pieces in your photographs, can be staged in an interesting and unique way, and play an important part in your wedding day story.  Your wedding photographer should not be on automatic pilot and give the impression that your wedding is the same as any other wedding covered.  These items are not just "things" accumulated to clutter your wedding, but should be seen and photographed as meaningful and memorable.   Your photographer should be curious about your particular details and curious about what details are important and essential to your wedding day story.  This is my mo "modus operandi" in all the weddings I've photographed- Washington DC, Virginia, Maryland.  So besides taking beautiful and inspired photographs of the bride and groom, family and friends, your photographer should take pride in capturing the details, details, details of your weddings.
