kez is a young marriage celebrant based in Newcastle, Australia

My delightful celebrant friend Katie Porritt posted this story to her facebook page yesterday.

"Yesterday I married Nathan and Katy in the Hunter Valley. All was going along smoothly until Nathan, repeating his vows after me, stumbled and vowed to take Katy as his "awful wedded wife". Everyone laughed and I commented to Nathan that I didn't think Katy was awful at all - in fact I thought she was quite lovely.
So then it was Katy's turn. As I read out her vows for her to repeat, she loudly and proudly (and deliberately) vowed to take Nathan as her "awful wedded husband".

We've all laughed at these kind of slips ups in movies or on sit-coms but the reality is unless your a professional at speaking in public is not an easy thing to do. (The most famous slip-up of all would be Ross's wedding in Friends)

Plus I don't believe that even the most acclaimed actor or seasoned politician would not be a little jittery on their wedding day and fumble through their words.

The thing is, these moments in weddings are what make them so special and memorable. If anything, a slight stumble and some lighthearted laughter help to settle the couple and break the "intensity" that nervous excitement can generate.

There seems to be a pressure on weddings to have "everything perfect" and yet in contradiction to that we take our partners "warts and all." We love them as they are, for all their perfect flaws.

There are very few things that can ruin a wedding ceremony because ultimately, come the end, you are married to the person you love most in the world. Enjoy it.
