Kez is a young Newcastle marriage celebrant

It could be the secret to planning the perfect wedding, is actually at work.

I don't mean raiding the petty cash tin and hoping the boss doesn't find out but looking at your working environment to really understand your own abilities and systems.

Have a look around your desk right now. How would you describe it? Are you drowning under a million post it notes? Or do you have 1,000 mini piles of paperwork? Is your desk spotlessly clean and every piece of paper filed neatly away in folders behind you? Or do you scan everything and operate off email?

How you function, or don't function, in your work space will give you valuable insight into how to best attack planning a wedding.

Are you a diary keeper, or does someone keep a diary for you? Can you work independently knowing what has to be done or do you need someone to give you a push?

Ask yourself: Are you big picture or small picture?

Big Picture people tend to be able to envisage the feel and emotion of their wedding day but can sometimes be to broad stroke and miss some of the finer details that will ultimately give them the perfect end result. A Big Picture personality also may not know how to get started.

Small Picture people run the risk of getting caught up in too many tiny details to be able to pull the whole thing together. When you focus too much on the dirty details you can tend to overreact when a problem arises, I’m not jinxing you here – you WILL have problems when planning your wedding. It is a fact.

Remove all the emotion for just one minute and look at the wedding as an event, and not the most amazingly romantic day of your life. Take a deep breath and be self critical and ask the question “How do I work best?”

Knowing the answer to that question may just surprise you as to how much it helps your wedding planning from setting a date, to finalising payments.

If you need a lot of time to ponder – well then, don’t set a date of 3 months time.
If you thrive on a tight deadline – then push yourself to get married sooner rather than later.

And of course, there is always the option that your partner is actually better at planning than you are. Remember: There is NO RULE that says the bride has to do it all.
