As we continue our cultural wedding tour, this week we are stopping in Japan and China. In the Japanese culture, purple is considered the color of love, so the bride will wear a silk kimono elaborately embroidered with purple iris flowers.  In China, the traditional bride will wear a bright red wedding gown to symbolize luck for the happy couple.

Spirits, ancestral and evil alike, play a role in both cultures. In Japan, the spirits of ancestors called “Kami” are called upon to bless the ceremony and marriage. While in China, loud and elaborate firework displays are set off to scare away any evil spirits.  Whether you follow the tradition of a colored wedding gown or welcome your spiritual ancestors, remember it’s always nice to keep traditions alive!
