Oh the sounds… and smells… of the French Country-side

Our journey around the world continues today as we pass through the romantic countryside of France. Known for its elegant food dishes, bakeries, and the Eiffel tower, France is also the birthplace of the very popular wedding tradition: bouquets and decorations of fresh flowers.  You might think that this was a tradition to help beautify the bride on her special day, but it had an actual purpose. Brides would carry these pretty blooms for their perfume-like smell.  Many, many years ago, bathing was a luxury that not even the wealthy were always privileged to have. If you were lucky enough to afford it, baths were taken in the late spring and summer months, when the weather was warm enough. Another reason most brides chose the months May or June to marry.

Not only did the French bride have to mindful of her own hygiene, she also had to be on the look-out for mischievous wedding guests. Late on the new couple’s wedding night, friends of the newlyweds would often show up outside their house banging pots and pans and making a general ruckus until the groom invited them in for snacks and drinks. So to all our couples, do yourselves a favor, make sure you have snacks handy to ward off any rogue wedding guests.
