When you hire a wedding DJ, you not only expect them to throw a great party for your wedding reception but they should also set a great tone for the evening from the minute they start playing.  Music can really set a person's mood and at a wedding, of course you want all of your guests to have a perky, ready to party attitude.

This is important to keep in mind when meeting with your wedding DJ to discuss not only the details for the dancing portion of the evening, but also for the cocktail and dinner hour music.  These two segments of the evening are the start to your wedding reception and the time to capture your guests' attention and give them the mindset that "yeah, this is going to be a great night!"

If you have your DJ play jazz music or soft rock for the entire cocktail and dinner hour, your guests may enjoy the laid back feel, however you are not assisting them with pumping up their mood so that they are ready for fun as soon as you enter the room as husband and wife.  And isn't that what you want for your wedding?  Guests that want to have fun and party the night away with you?

Since it's a wedding, a celebration, of course you want songs about love and relationships and happiness, however they don't have to come with a slow, ballad tune.  There are plenty of jazz artists with songs on this theme that are upbeat.  For example,  if you like Frank Sinatra, play "The Best Is Yet To Come" or Dean Martin's  "I Can't Believe Your In Love With Me"  and "That's Amore."

There are also plenty of soulful tunes that go perfect for dinner, especially as the meal is winding down and heading into the dancing portion.  For example "My Girl," "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," "Sweet Soul Music," "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Tell Her About It" are great songs for this transition.

So when planning your wedding reception, just think about the mood you want to set.  If you want your guests to be energized and really enjoy the music (and your reception as a whole) from start to finish, then talk to your wedding DJ. He or she will be able to suggest songs to incorporate into your cocktail hour and dinner music so that your vision for the start of your wedding reception really comes to life from the minute the first song is played.

Happy planning!
