a celebrant should match your wedding colours

The code of practice for marriage celebrants states a marriage celebrant must "ensure that his or her personal presentation is of an appropriate standard for the marriage ceremony, and respect the expectations of the parties in relation to the ceremony;".

As there is no definition of "appropriate standard" by the Attorney General's office the choice of wardrobe comes down to the individual celebrant but where does this leave you - the Bride with a colour scheme?

A great celebrant will ask the question about your colours, and settings and work within their own wardrobe to compliment your theme. Before deciding on a celebrant check out their website or ask to photos of previous weddings. Do you like what they are wearing? Better yet, after meeting with them are you comfortable to talk honestly and openly about their fashion?

Can I insist upon a celebrant wearing a particular colour or clothing?

You can ask a celebrant to work in with your colours, but you cannot ask them to make a specific purchase or ask them to have an outfit made.

The celebrant's fee is decided upon the lodgment of paperwork , design of your ceremony and the service they provide. Most celebrants don't budget for clothing purchases per wedding.

That said, I know of a celebrant in Sydney who charges over $3,ooo a wedding - this cost includes the ceremony, lodgement and the purchase of an outfit that will be worn at your wedding, and your wedding only.

If you want your celebrant in fancy dress, in a tux, in a gown or in a dress matched perfectly to your colours then you should provide the clothings items for the celebrant (in their size) or else compensate the celebrant for the purchase.

Any additional cost for the celebrant to be dressed by your design should be factored into the final quote for their services.

Of course, as with any wedding, it is the general rule the Celebrant will not wear white, or ivory.
