Ever wonder "how many bottles of wine do I order for 100 guests?" What about beer and liquor? How do I calculate how much of each to prepare for the wedding? Well, if you are renting a reception hall, be prepared to pony up with some bucks. Yes, they will have everything on hand, but it is FAR LESS EXPENSIVE, to calculate the number of guests and do it yourself. You'll save a bundle AND, you'll keep Uncle Wilber and Aunt Millie sober.

There is an easy way to calculate alcohol usage and not over purchase.

A standard serving of wine is five ounces at 12% alcohol by volume. This means you get:
Five glasses per 750ml/26 oz bottle.
Seven glasses per 1L/35 oz bottle
101/2 glasses per magnum

Follow these 3 steps when calculating your needs:

1. Calculate how many people will be drinking at the event.
2. Multiply this number by four. This tells you the maximum number of standard drinks you will need.
3. Translate the number of standard drinks into cases of spirits and bottles of wine.

The following is an example:

100 “standard drinks” = approximately:

Beer- 100 - 341ml/12 oz bottles
Wine- 20 - 750ml/26 oz bottles
Suppose you expect 200 people to be drinking at your event. The recommended number of drinks you need is 800 (4 x 200). Let’s further suppose that you expect about half of the people to drink beer and the rest to be divided between spirits and wine. The 800 “standard drinks” required would be divided as follows: 400 bottles of beer (4 x 100) , plus 12 bottles of spirits (2 x 6), plus 40 bottles of wine. (2 x 20)
