The great outdoors might not be so great if you don't plan very carefully for your summer wedding. In some parts of the country you could be pretty safe. It doesn't usually rain that much this time of year in climates like New Mexico or Wyoming. Southern California stays fairly dry in summer too, but Florida, that's another story. The northern parts of the country are fifty/fifty. Do you want to take a chance on an outdoor wedding? Looking at back-up options is probably a good idea.

Two elemental forces can ruin your wedding in summertime. One is, of course, rain. The other is heat. If you don't take the high temperatures into account in the planning process you could be in trouble on the day of. Does your wedding cake have icing on it that could melt in the sun? Did your order edible wedding favors? Are your guests going to be sweltering in formal wear or did you make it clear on the invitations that casual is okay? You might have thought to ask these questions already.

If not, it's time to take a look at them now. One cardinal rule of wedding planning is to be prepared for everything. Start with the food. If the cake could melt in the sun, make sure you have a refrigerated area to keep it in, or even better, an indoor venue where your guests can enjoy it in comfort. The best summer weddings are those with an outdoor ceremony and an indoor reception. Luxuries such as air conditioning and a roof overhead go a long way towards reducing the stress of the day.

Eliminate the edible wedding favors and order standard summer wedding favors favors instead. Evaluate your transportation options. A horse drawn carriage with an open roof can be an appealing novelty, but how will that expensive wedding dress and hairstyle look after prolonged exposure to hot sun, wind, or possible rain? Going with a nice stretch limousine may seem boring, but it ensures that the most important package of the day, the bride, is delivered safe and intact. You can always do the horse and carriage thing on your honeymoon when you're wearing more comfortable clothing.

Speaking of the honeymoon, where are you planning on going after your summer wedding? Tropical climates are always a great time... in the winter. Go in the summer and you're looking at temperatures over a hundred degrees and tropical storms. More northern venues are in the mid eighties, sunny and dry, the perfect weather for a day at the beach or a pleasant night walking outdoors. Think about it. And while you're at it, think more carefully about your other summer wedding plans.
