Tips from a Wedding DJ - Tell Your Story

As a wedding DJ, our job goes much further than just playing music and making announcements at your wedding.  One of the other roles that we pride ourselves on is offering our brides and grooms different options on how to make their wedding unique and personal to them.

Over the next few weeks, we will offer various tips on how to do just that at your wedding reception!

Tips From a Wedding DJ:

#1.  Tell your guests the story of how you met

There will probably be a good amount of people at your wedding reception that may not know how you and your fiance met, or that simply don't remember.  When they hear your story, they will become emotionally engaged.  They may laugh, tears might come to their eyes.  It cues them in to the meaning and uniqueness of your special day.

How did you meet your fiancé?  What was your first impression of him/her?  Where was your first date?  How did you get engaged?

This idea can be incorporated in a couple of ways:

  • Your wedding DJ can tell your story at your wedding reception. It can be something you have written for each other or something we can write for you based on questions we will cover at the pre-wedding meeting.
  • Instead of telling the story of how you met – we also invite couples to write a short love letter to each other before the wedding and NOT share it with each other. Then on the wedding day, we read your letters just before the First Dance.  This could also be read during, dinner, etc.
Feel free to talk to your wedding DJ regarding this idea or any other additional ways to incorporate sharing your story into your wedding reception.

Tip: Don't just enter- MAKE an entrance!

The difference may be subtle but it is critical. If you just walk in when you are announced, you didn't make an entrance. You've got to pause at some point and acknowledge your guests. You can do this simply by stopping, standing and smiling for a few seconds. Your guests want that visual feedback that you are feeling their love, applause and admiration. So stop, smile and make some eye contact- this moment is only going to happen once! For the more adventurous, a spin across the floor or romantic dip might work. Keep it simple and enjoy.
