Wedding Traditions, Ring Bearer - Banquets NJ

The ring bearer carries a white satin pillow down the aisle.  A soft "aw!" is heard amongst the wedding guest as they catch a glimpse of this pint-sized man, dressed to the nines.  Later, the officiant asks for the rings.  Yet he does not gesture to the little boy; instead, the best man reaches within his coat pocket and pulls out the two rings, handing them over so the ceremony can continue.  And so we pose the question: if the best man is the one to hold the wedding rings, what be the point of the ring bearer at all?

As one might assume, his position remains in existence for the purposes of tradition.  Ring bearers, originally called page boys, were young boys who assisted in carrying a bride's long train with her down the aisle.  A ring bearer was appointed out of the pages to carry the rings down the aisle before the flower girl's entrance.  In today's world, most likely out of paranoia and knowing of the fidgety nature of a four-to-eight year old boy, he now carries imitation rings down the aisle while the real rings remain with the best man.  Occasionally seen today as well is the practice of the maid (or matron) of honor keeping safe the groom's wedding ring while the best man does the same for the bride's.

If you are trusting enough of the little guy, you can certainly tie the real rings to the pillow.  However, be sure to tie them securely enough so should his nerves get the best of him, your wedding rings don't end up lost in the abyss.
