Hello Wedding Photographers,

I need your help!  I'm preparing a blog post that will be published next month, which will be called: 10 Questions to Ask a Wedding Photographer Before You Hire Them.  I'd love to hear your thoughts on what those questions should be.  I'll pick the 10 best questions.  If I choose your question, I'll be sure to mention your business name and link to your website.  So, this is a great way for you to get a ton of free exposure for your business.

Here's what I need you to do...

  1. In the discussion thread below, please share one question that engaged couples should ask you before they hire you.  You may also include a beautiful photo.
  2. Be sure to include your business name as well as a link to your website and/or blog.

Thanks in advance for your help.  I can't wait to hear what you have to say!

Probably the most critical question is what type of personality does the photographer have?  How does he/she handle stressful situations and interact with guests at weddings?

1.  Do you offer a guarantee

2.  Do you have liability insurance

3.  Do you have back up equipment

4.  Do you have an assistant and/or second photographer

5.  How much time do you need to do the formals

6.  What's the best time of day to do the ceremony

One question I wish couples asked me and my peers: Why should I choose you - or photographers at your price point - over those who are cheaper and include more?

Question - my ceremony will be outside and I want perfect lighting...should I be concerned where the sun is located at my ceremony site?

Do you have a business license, carry liability insurance and comply with all state and local laws that pertain to the operation of a business? Could you provide me with a copy of (or show me) your business license and certificate of insurance?

In my experience since starting my business in 2007, a significant number of people who represent themselves as "professional" photographers, and charge $ for services and products, in fact are not doing so in a legal and ethical manner. Most municipalities do not require liability insurance, but any reputable business will have a policy. Those that don't operate in a legal and ethical manner usually don't last and cause the most heartache with broken contracts and poor performance. It all starts with these basics but brides generally assume everyone complies, when in fact many do not.

A critical question these days is does the photographer have experience shooting in natural light AND using artificial lighting.  I've seen the results of natural light photographers that do a great job outside in the daytime, but have trouble shooting in a dimly lit reception hall at 8pm

How do you interact with couples on their wedding day? Will you be telling us what to do throughout the day, let moments happen naturally as you photograph them, or a bit of both?

Have you shot a wedding at my venue or a venue similar to mine?

How the photographer answers this question will tell you a lot about their style, personality and adaptability.  It isn't necessary for a great photographer to have shot at your venue before but they should be familiar with the challenges and opportunities each venue creates.

Can you show me a complete wedding?  What you see on our websites is our highlight reel.  To make sure you are choosing the right photographer ask to see a whole wedding.

One that I like to have asked is walk me through the booking to end process. This gives me a chance to explain the entire wedding process start to finish so we are on the same page, because in the end if they don't like the process it doesn't matter have beautiful the photographs are they will be unhappy

I always get the "list" of questions that EVERYONE asks, doe you have a backup, have you here before, how long for formals, etc, etc. The one question I always ask my couples is pretty important I think:

"What do you want from your photographer?" I ask them to make it personal. What kind of images, how much posed images vs. just let me do my thing. Do you place more value in emotional photos vs. group shots? I then ask them which photos from my portfolio tug at your heart? From the answers they give we BOTH walk way from our meeting with a clear sense of what is expected ( which is super important) during the wedding.
